Lean Simulations

Healing Healthcare Lean Pharmacy Simulation:

While the concepts of Lean are fairly straightforward, applying the tools to our daily work can be counter-intuitive. This entertaining and informative pharmacy simulation demonstrates that Lean concepts work in healthcare. Topics covered include value stream mapping, batch reduction, cellular flow, 5-S, visual controls, and error reduction.  Participants will be lead through multiple rounds of a simulated pharmacy setting in which they will learn to apply Lean concepts. Healing Healthcare is a key component of launching a Lean Healthcare initiative.
The success through using this approach speaks for itself. Healing Healthcare continues to be an effective means of helping teams look for waste in healthcare processes. We have seen significant results from project activity initiated by staff who merely participated in the training simulation. In addition, the simulation fosters an environment of creativity within teams and builds confidence to apply Lean techniques. We have received excellent reviews regarding Healing Healthcare when used as part of a Lean Healthcare implementation. The presentation has been highly rated at multiple national Lean Healthcare conferences.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to understand the basics of and test Lean Tools in order to identify and eliminate wasted resources in the healthcare environment. Participants will be lead through the concepts of the eight wastes with healthcare-related examples. The team will apply Lean Tools including:
  • Value Stream Mapping
  • 5-S and Visual Controls
  • Point-of-Use Storage
  • Team Concepts
  • Batch Reduction
  • Cellular Flow
The Healing Healthcare Lean Pharmacy Simulation is being offered under a licensing agreement to groups interested in rapidly transferring knowledge of Lean principles and tools across an organization to support a Lean Healthcare Transformation. The licensing agreement includes everything needed to conduct training sessions as part of a Lean Healthcare implementation, including on-site train-the-trainer session to be conducted for up to 15 participants.

Lean Healthcare Job Instruction Simulation:

Why have your new hires "shadow" 3 or 4 staff members that all do the same task different ways? What they are really learning is that "it does not really matter how I do it." These variations in practice result in variation in outcomes. Your organization can increase the efficiency and quality of training time by utilizing a proven instructional format and training methodology based on the Toyota Production System. By having a documented "best practice" standard for a task, job or procedure, you can train staff in the one agreed upon "way that works". Having a standard also gives a baseline for improvement, as new improvements or the latest evidence-based practices can be integrated into the standard. By having the key points and reasons for each step integrated into the instruction, people are less likely to cut corners resulting in negative outcomes and frustrations for patient and caregivers alike.
